  5. HOW TO INSTALL
  6. --------------
  7.  
  8. Copy RegClean.EXE to any folder on your machine.
  9.  
  10. HOW TO RUN
  11. ----------
  12.  
  13. Double-click on the RegClean icon.
  14.  
  15. RegClean will start by displaying a progress dialog. While this
  16. is shown, it will load a copy of the parts of the registry that
  17. it is going to check, and perform the actual scanning. Depending
  18. on how much information is in the registry and the speed of your
  19. CPU, this will take anywhere from about 2 to 30 minutes.
  20.  
  21. If you have many entries in your registry, there may be times
  22. when RegClean appears to have stopped working. In fact, RegClean
  23. may appear completely halted whenever it is checking remote or
  24. removable drives.
  25.  
  26. Once these progress meters are gone, you will be prompted for the
  27. next
  28. action. You can do two things at this point:
  29.  
  30. 1. Exit RegClean.
  31.  
  32.    Well, thatÆs kind of pointless, but you can do it. Just press
  33.    the Cancel button.
  34.  
  35. 2. Allow RegClean to fix errors that it found.
  36.  
  37.    This will create an UNDO.REG file in the folder where RegClean
  38.    was run. The file will be titled "Undo computer yyyymmdd
  39.    hhmmss.REG," where computer is the name of your machine, and
  40.    yyyymmdd is the date and hhmmss is the time.
  41.  
  42.    After the file is saved, RegClean will remove these entries
  43.    from the registry. You will see a progress meter while it does
  44.    this. Sometimes, the progress meter may stop momentarily, but
  45.    it should resume after a few seconds. When the meter is gone,
  46.    RegClean is done. Press Exit to end RegClean.

  48. WHAT REGCLEAN DOES
  49. ------------------

  51. RegClean analyzes Windows Registry keys stored in a common
  52. location in the Windows Registry. It finds keys that contain
  53. erroneous values, and after recording those entries in the
  54. Undo.Reg file, it removes them from the Windows Registry.
  55.  
  56. WHAT REGCLEAN DOESN'T DO
  57. ------------------------
  58.  
  59. RegClean does not fix every known problem with the registry. It
  60. does not fix a "corrupt" registry; it only fixes problems with
  61. some of the entries that are in a normal registry.
  62.  
  63. It is very possible that RegClean will not correct a problem that
  64. you have encountered. RegClean will leave any entries in the
  65. registry that it doesn't understand or could possibly be correct.

  69. FIXES FOR REGCLEAN 4.1a

  71.  - ALWAYS REPORTS ERRORS
  72.  
  73.    RegClean will now report that it has found all the errors that
  74.    it can correct. Usually, you must run RegClean twice the first
  75.    time to get it to this point. This is expected behavior for
  76.    RegClean.

  78.  - CRASHES
  79.  
  80.    RegClean should run correctly on these Intel-based operating
  81.    systems:

  83.    Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 (with Service Pack 3)
  84.    Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (all versions) and later
  85.    Microsoft Windows 95 (all versions) and later

  103. Two messages boxes appear. One box says:
  104.  
  105.    "REGCLEAN.EXE is linked to missing export OLEAUT32.DLL:421"
  106.  
  107. while the next message box says:
  108.  
  109.    "A device attached to the system is not correctly functioning"
  110.  
  111. RESOLUTION
  112. ----------
  113.  
  114. You need to install the update to the OLE Automation system
  115. libraries. These files are contained in the executable
  116. OADIST.EXE, which is included in the download. (NOTE: If you are
  117. using Window NT 3.51, you must use OADIST2Z.EXE instead; read the
  118. KB article shown below.)
  119.

  129. You can use most web browsers to download this file from either
  130. location. This file is also on the Microsoft Download Library
  131. BBS.

  133. MORE INFORMATION
  134. ----------------

  136. OADIST.EXE is a self-extracting Cabinet that will install the
  137. Automation libraries on your system. You just need to download
  138. the file OADIST.EXE and double-click to run it. It will prompt
  139. you to be sure that you want to proceed. Answering "yes" will
  140. update the Automation libraries on your computer.
  141.  
  142. This self-extracting Cabinet only works on Windows NT 4.0 and
  143. Windows 95. If you are on Windows NT 3.51, you will need to get
  144. OADIST2Z.EXE instead, which is still being published. Both
  145. contain the same files. However, the OADIST2Z.EXE is a self-
  146. extracting ZIP file with a README.TXT file that contains
  147. installation instructions.

  149. OADIST.EXE is 490096 bytes.
  150. OADIST2Z.EXE is 559499 bytes.

  154. PROBLEM: IT DOESN'T SOLVE MY REGISTRY PROBLEMS
  155.

  158. IT JUST CREATES MORE PROBLEMS

  162. Running RegClean may, in a few cases, cause other problems, such
  163. as causing part of the Microsoft Network viewer to stop
  164. functioning, or causing other programs to stop functioning. If
  165. this happens to you, simply Undo the changes RegClean made, by
  166. double-clicking on the last Undo.Reg file.
  167.  
  168. These types of problems are very rare, but it's a good idea to
  169. keep your last Undo.Reg file for at least a few days or so.
  170.  
  171. Microsoft will continue improving RegClean to reduce the
  172. frequency of problems like these.

  176. PROBLEM: CAN'T UNDO THE UNDO.REG FILE
  177.

  183. Windows displays several error message boxes when you try to
  184. double-click the UNDO.REG file to undo the changes RegClean made.
  185.  
  186. RESOLUTION
  187. ----------
  188.  
  189. This problem is unrelated to RegClean. It's a problem with the
  190. Associated Program for .REG files.
  191.  
  192. To correct this problem:
  193.  
  194. 1. Go to any Explorer window, click the View menu, and select
  195.    Options.
  196.  
  197. 2. In the Options dialog, select the File Types tab.
  198.  
  199. 3. Scroll down in the "Registered file types:" list until you
  200.    find the entry called "Registration Entries."
  201.  
  202. 4. Double-click this item or click on the Edit button.
  203.  
  204. 5. In the Edit File Type dialog, select the "Merge" entry, and
  205.    either double-click this item or click on the Edit button.
  206.  
  207. 6. In the "Editing action for type: Registration Entries" dialog
  208.    box, make sure that the text in the "Application used to
  209.    perform action:" field has the following entry, including the
  210.    double quotes:
  211.  
  212.       regedit.exe "%1"
  213.  
  214. 7. Click the OK buttons to dismiss all three dialog boxes.
  215.  
  216. 8. You should be able to double-click on the Undo.Reg file now.
